2011 Adventure VII

Date of Adventure: Sat. 15 Oct. 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: Shrewsbury

Length of Adventure, miles: 3

Length of Adventure, hours: 2.25

Weather: Cool, temps in around 60. Windy. Overcast with a little rain and a couple bursts of sunshine.

Companions: Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None on the trail, 2 trucks on the road on our way out.

Notes: 1. The trail was sodden and muddy, but none the worse for wear after Hurricane Irene. 2. Don't ask me what trails I followed because I have no idea. As always, the intersections I actually encountered did not match up to my map and I followed what might have been a trail, until I bushwacked along orange markings that are not trail related, until I stumbled upon a trail again. 3. Colyn and I both wore bright red along with some bright orange surveyor's tape ribbons for visibility.

2011 Adventure VI

Date of Adventure: Sun. 18 Sept. 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: Moosalamoo

Length of Adventure, miles: 5

Length of Adventure, hours: 4.5

Weather: Warm, sunny, light breeze, clear sky, temps in 60s, perfect fall day.

Companions: Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: A couple with a dog, and a single hiker at the 1st trailhead. A couple hiking at the 2nd trailhead. Signs of a wedding at the rock near the top of the hill in the blueberry patch.

Notes of Interest: 1. What a beautiful fall day for a hike. The view from the blueberry patch must be one of my favorites. 2. There didn't seem to be much damage from Hurricane Irene except in the last section as you swing around the west side of Hogback mountain trail. 3. Along the section near the 2nd trailhead there were a lot of small trees/bushes with some kind of berry. The berry was about the size of a pea, champagne colored, hard, and in clusters. When it was ripe (I think ripe) it was dark and mushy. 4. The 2nd trailhead has a great place to pitch a tent. Near the river, flat, not in a field, and well away from the parking area. I will have to make a point to camp there next year.

Photo: About a 200* view looking west from the blueberry field on Hogback Mt. Trail.

2011 Adventure IV

Date of Adventure: Fri. 16 Sept. 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: East Wallingford App/Long Trail/Beaver Pond

Length of Adventure, miles: ?

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.5

Weather: Temps around 60, sunny, light breeze. Great hiking weather. Trail mostly dry, except where it is usually wet. This trail doesn't look like it received any damage from the hurricane flooding.

Companions: Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Notes of Interest: 1. The remains of a beaver dam are still there, but the dam itself is not holding any water. There is a piddly little puddle of water. The rest of what used to be under water is mostly walkable if you're careful. 2. Could not clearly find the old cabin structure, but I didn't go bushwacking to find it, either. I think its there, but I cannot say for sure.

Photo: The area of the former beaver pond. Most of the visible area was under water a couple years ago. The beaver damn was (and the remains still are) to the far right out of the frame.

2011 Aventure V

Date of Adventure: Sat. 17 Sept. 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: Pond Woods WMA

Length of Adventure, miles: ?

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.5

Weather: Warm, temps in the 60s. Sunny. Very comfortable. Trail was wet in several places.

Companions: Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Notes of Interest: 1. My first trip along this "trail." I started at the picnic area and found a little footpath into the woods. It is clearly a place of teenage gathering because there were beer/soda cans, food wrappers, etc. I followed the footpath until it disappeared, then followed a stone wall until I reached a wide roadbed. The road didn't have any logical beginning or end. I ended up reaching an old swampy bog that was mostly dried up. 2. Suffered 3 hornet stings.

2011 Adventure III

Date of Adventure: Sat. 9 July 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: 2.5

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.5

Weather: Partly cloudy, temps in the sun about 80, temps in the shaded woods about 70.

Companion(s): Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Notes of Interest: 1. The trail was fairly wet. Most of the foliage was wet, too. There must have been a pretty good storm recently, because all the run off streams were flowing, and I could see where the water had run down the trail. 2. Saw 2 red newts hiding under a leaf. 3. Heard a Blue Jay. I almost never see or hear Blue Jays while I'm hiking.

2011 Adventure II

Date of Adventure: 2 July 2011

Type of Adventure: Canoe Paddle

Place of Adventure: Benson Landing

Length of Adventure, miles: maybe 1? We spent more time just floating and watching the Osprey than actually paddling.

Length of Adventure, hours: approximately 2.5

Weather: Beautiful! Temps in upper 70s, sunny, light breeze.

Companions: Mom

Other Adventurers Encountered: Canoers, kayakers, boaters

Notes of Interest: 1. We saw a pair of Osprey on a nest. They were on platform 1. We may have drifted too close to them accidentally. I took about 120 pictures, and maybe 4 came out really nicely. 2. We heard a bird we saw, but could not identify. Even Mom had never heard the bird call before.

2011 Adventure I

Date of Adventure: 30 June 2011

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: approximately 2

Length of Adventure, hours: approximately 1.25

Weather: Temps in the 60's, mostly overcast.

Companion(s): Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Notes of Interest: I took it easy because it's been so long since we've hiked. We just did the short loop, which is mostly flat. Colyn recalled pretty well. It was so peaceful and calm being back out in the woods.
