Monthly Recap

Month: June

Total Adventures: 8

Total Miles Adventured: 62.5

Total Hours Adventured: 14.5

Adventure Destinations: Rutland Area, PWMA, Moosalamoo, Pittsford Trails

Adventure Companion(s): Colyn, Mom, RCHS Adoptee Paws

Notes of Interest: 1. I know I missed 2 bike commutes, each of which was 12 miles and 1.5 hours. 2. This month has been extremely wet. I started out well with the bike commutes, and then wasn't able to bike for almost 2 weeks due to rain. 3. The rain has all the trails extremely wet. 4. I've been able to explore new trails in familiar areas, and I'm hoping to do more of the same during the rest of the summer.

Notes of Interest: 1. They are rebuilding two of the old roads in the park. And hikers are warned to stay off these roads. 2. When crossing the powerline on Doorknob, if you look south along the powerline you'll be looking down in Rt 4A. You can't quite see Gawet Marble, but you can see the Charlebois building, the motorcycle shop, the little gas station, and the used car place.

Monthly Recap

Month: Jan. 2009

Number of Adventures: 8

Miles Adventured: 16.25

Hours Adventured: 11

Adventure Destinations: Patch Hollow, Pittsford Trails, Shrewsbury/PWMA

Adventure Companions: My Father, Colyn, Alaska, Shadow

Thoughts: Due to illness and extreme weather, I wasn't able to get out very much this month. I am thrilled that I discovered the Patch Hollow trail. Next month my goal is to reach the pond. I am also excited that I finally obtained a map of some of the trails in Shrewsbury/PWMA. I hope to make use of those trails quite a bit in the future. So far, this winter has been fantastic for snow shoeing. Out of curiousity, I weighed all my winter hiking gear. Just my boots, coat, and snow shoes weigh 10lbs. When I add my backpack with water, extra mittens and hat, and other cold weather supplies, my gear totals 18lbs. Once I build up my winter hiking stamina, I should be perfect going into summer hiking.

Adventure XXV

Type of Adventure: Snowshoe hike

Date of Adventure: Tues. 27 Jan. 2009

Place of Adventure: Pittsford Trails

Length of Adventure, miles: 2

Length of Adventure, hours: 1

Weather: Sunny, temps in low 20's, plenty of snow on the ground

Companion(s): RCHS adoptee, Alaska

Other Adventurers Encountered: 1 cross country skiier, she started at the other end of the trail head and we never crossed paths again.

Notes: 1. Lots of people make shortcuts, or cross the fields in different directions than normal. Because everything is frozen over, short cuts are easier. 2. A fleece outer layer is better than my parka when the temps are in the 20's.

Adventure XX

Type of Adventure: Hike

Date of Adventure: Tues 6 Jan 2009

Place of Adventure: Pittsford Trails

Length of Adventure, miles: 2.4

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.25

Companions: Shadow

Other Adventurers Encountered: 1 hiker, 2 dogs

Weather: Bright, sunny, light breeze, temps in the 20's

Points of Interest: Ice! Most of the trail was basically flooded and frozen. There is a nice 1" of crusty snow on top, which provides traction. The river was about 5 feet higher than normal, but is down to only 2-3 feet higher than normal. As long as things stay cold, the trail should be perfect for hiking all winter.

Adventure XIII

Type of Adventure: Hike

Date of Adventure: Tues. 9 Dec. 2008

Place of Adventure: Pittsford Trails

Length of Adventure, miles: 2.4

Length of Adventure, hours: 1

Companions: RCHS Adoptee, Reno

Weather: Sunny; high, wispy clouds; low 30's

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Point of Interest: 1. The river is freezing up along the debris dam. Some of the submerged logs are gathering a nice coating of ice. It's visible through the water. 2. A new sign post was put up a few months ago in one of the meadows. The post has a very interesting pattern chewed into it. I assume a worm, or bug was working on the log before it became a post. 3. At the end of the trail, where the trail splits from the river, the river is starting to freeze. Right in the middle, was a strange circle almost as wide as the river itself. Even the snow was blown along the edge of the circle.

The Debris Dam

This is the tree that fell down most recently, probably last spring. It stretches almost all the way across the river.

Adventure VI

Type of Adventure: Hike

Date of Adventure: Tues. 11 Nov. 2008

Place of Adventure: Cadwell Trail, Pittsford, Vermont

Length of Adventure, Miles: 2.4

Length of Adventure, Hours: 1 hour

Weather: Overcast, dreary, temps in the upper 30's.

Companions: RCHS adoptee, Chelsea

Other Adventurists Encountered: None

Points of Interest: Someone is clearing trees along the Otter Creek section of the trail. Also, the debris dam on Furnace Brook near the beginning of the trail is changing. I'm pretty sure another chunk of the river bank, along with a large tree, fell in recently. I could be wrong, but I don't think it was like that last time. The high water a couple weeks ago seems to have pushed the old debris dam further along, but the new tree that fell in the water is still blocking it up. It is very interesting to watch this debris dam develop.

Adventure III

Type of Adventure: Hike

Date of Adventure: Sat. 1 Nov. 2008

Place of Adventure: Cadwell Trail, Pittsford, Vermont

Length of Adventure, Miles: 2.4

Length of Adventure, Hours: 1.25

Weather: Bright and sunny. Temps in the 40's. Light wind.

Companion(s): RCHS adoptee, Manny

Other Adventurists Encountered: None

Points of Interest: None

Comments: This was my "morning" hike today, we started around 11am. The trail was really wet today, although it hasn't rained since Tuesday. This trail is perpetually wet. The river was 2-3 feet higher than normal. I didn't see the Blue Heron, which has been there every time I visited this summer, so I think it has migrated south. Manny was pretty well behaved, except for a couple incidents of pure psychotic puppiness.
