Adventure LVI

Date of Adventure: 7 July 2009

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: 2

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.25

Weather: Overcast, temps in 70's, trail very wet, ending in thunderstorms

Companion(s): Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: None

Notes of Interest: 1. I went out Lee's Large Loop in an attempt to find and follow Joyce's Straightarm. I found some sort of trail, but I don't know if it was Joyce's or just a deer/moose trail. So far, I haven't been able to find a clear trail for any of these supposed unmarked trails, which annoys me.

Adventure LV

Date of Adventure: 6 July 2009

Type of Adventure: Hike

Place of Adventure: Pine Hill Park

Length of Adventure, miles: 3

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.25

Companion(s): Colyn

Weather: Perfect! Sunny, temps in 70's, dry trail

Other Adventurers Encountered: One large group of hikers, one large group of trail volunteers

Notes of Interest: 1. Interesting Letter to the Editor in today's Rutland Herald regarding the road maintenance and logging. I haven't noticed any logging or disruption. The road looks better, but the trees certainly don't look destroyed, nor do the trails. 2. There is a new trail map for the park. I like that the new map has mileage, but I'm disappointed that it no longer has the topo markings. 3. Due to limited time we hiked a short loop today: Upper Giorgetti, Trillium, Birches, Vista, Upper Ledges, Salamander, 999, Rocky Pond, Underdog, Pond Rd, Vista, Scramble, Backstairs, Upper Giorgetti. 4. Colyn behaved excellently with the groups of people, and even managed to behave well enough in the face of an off leash dog.

Adventure XXIX

Date of Adventure: Sat. 7 Feb 2009

Type of Adventure: Snow shoe hike

Place of Adventure: Shrewsbury/PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: approximately 2

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.5

Weather: Temps in upper 20's, bright and sunny changing to overcast. Still all the snow.

Companion(s): Colyn and Mom

Other Adventurers Encountered: 4 cross country skiers.

Notes: 1. The weather was so perfect. 2. We did the same loop again, although this time I managed to take the trail that comes out below the parking area on the way back. That way, I avoided all the snowmobilers. I just followed the x-c ski tracks. I found where I went wrong last time; the path really isn't obvious where I got confused, although later it becomes as wide as a wheel track. It's mostly downhill to the parking lot. I'm not sure if it is more or less steep than the snowmobile trail. 3. My hiking time has definitely improved. We could have done the hike quicker, but we stopped a bunch of times and we threw snow balls for Colyn. I should be able to manage this hike in an hour easily in the summer. I can't wait to try some of the other trails.

Adventure XXVIII

Date of Adventure: 3 Feb. 2009

Type of Adventure: Snowshoe hike

Place of Adventure: Shrewsbury/PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: approximately 2.25

Length of Adventure, hours: 1.5

Weather: Temps in the teens, windy, sunny

Companion(s): Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: 2 cross country skiiers.

Notes: 1. For the first time I noticed a plastic jar nailed sideways to the bulletin board at the trail head. Inside is a "guest book" where you can log when you visited, where you came from, what you saw, and anything else you feel like sharing. The book is dated for the beginning of Jan, but I'd never noticed it before. Mostly the same people seem to use the trail and document it. I added entries for Colyn and I. I'm very tempted to put a couple copies of the trail map inside. 2. The trail was packed down quite nicely this time, although I think only 1 or 2 other people used the short loop I followed last time. 3. I found the tree I had marked the first time Mom and I went out there. It was right next to where I fell last time Colyn and I went out. No wonder I didn't see it that time, I was busy flopping around on my back like a turtle. It turns out Mom and I were almost half way around when we turned around that time.

The Map

The star is approximately where I marked the tree. And where I fell last time.

Adventure XXVII

Type of Adventure: Snowshoe hike

Date of Adventure: Friday, 30 Jan. 2009

Place of Adventure: Shrewsbury, PWMA

Length of Adventure, miles: 2.25

Length of Adventure, hours: 2

Weather: Temps in the upper 20's, overcast, flurries turning into light snow showers. 1-2 feet of fresh snow on the ground.

Companion(s): Colyn

Other Adventurers Encountered: 4 cross country skiiers, several snowmobile transporting vehicles, although none of the actual snowmobiles.

Notes: 1. I finally managed to complete the loop that I've attempted twice before. 2. We got first tracks in the fresh snow. It was rough going, but we made it. 3. I really need to complete my hiking gear. I need gators for my snowshoes, wool pants to keep me warmer. I also need an extra mini maglight, swiss army knife, first aid kit, and matches for my backpack.
